The band LPGS and comedian Sherri Carden, best known for her comedic sketches as the “Puna Princess” and the “Martha Stewart of Puna,” will perform May 9 in an event at the Eagles Club to raise funds for a community center in Orchidland.
The celebration will run from 5-9 p.m. and feature live music, free pupus, dinner and dancing. Cajun gumbo, Italian beef sandwiches and vegetarian plates will be sold for $5 and $7. There also will be a silent auction, and beverages and cocktails for sale.
The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Orchidland Neighbors, whose goal is to raise funds for a community center. A 2-acre lot for a center was purchased in 2000.
With 2,400 lot owners, Carden said friends and families living in Orchidland could benefit greatly from having a community center. Orchidland Neighbors hopes to create a playground area, picnics, barbecues and classroom space. The group says there is a need for a place where people can come together and share their visions for the future.
“It would be a great thing for Puna to offer after-school programs for at-risk youth in arts and agriculture,” Carden said. “I believe it is important to provide opportunities for keiki and kupuna to come together.”
Carden appeared twice on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and opened for local comedians Andy Bumatai and Mel Cabang.
In addition to her funny side, Carden has a small farm in Orchidland and grows most of her own food.
”There is nothing quite as satisfying as growing your own organic food,” she said.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For more information, call Ginny Aste at 854-1225.
