HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu’s former mayor is again taking on the top leadership role at the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association.
Mufi Hannemann was the president and, later, CEO of the organization in 2011 and for part of 2012. He was selected by a search committee from a pool of candidates to take on the role again.
Kelly Hoen chairs the group’s board of directors and said in a statement that Hannemann “did a stellar job in leading HLTA previously.”
“We had excellent candidates come forward wanting to lead HLTA, but the search committee felt that Mufi was the best choice considering his superb record of leadership, experience and drive in supporting tourism’s best interests,” Hoen said.
The Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association represents 170 lodging properties including hotels condominiums, and timeshares. Hannemann starts at the nonprofit advocacy organization July 20.
Hannemann was the mayor of Honolulu from 2005 to 2010 and unsuccessfully ran for governor last year.
The former mayor replaces George Szigeti, who was selected last month to serve as the president of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
