Big Island residents who use Instagram will have two opportunities to participate in free Instameets as part of National Social Media Day on Tuesday.
Sponsored by Social Media Club Hawaii, the Big Island Instameets will be conducted from 5-7 p.m. at Daylight Mind Coffee Co. in Kailua-Kona and the Japanese tea house in Queen Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo.
An InstaMeet is where Instagram users come together in an informal setting to network and share tips, as well as take pictures. Founded in 2010, Instagram is different from Twitter or Facebook in that it focuses on people posting photographs.
While this is the third year Social Media Club Hawaii has hosted an event in East Hawaii in honor of national Social Media Day, it’s the first time they’ve hosted simultaneous events in Kona and Hilo.
“We had a large turnout for the Instameet we held in Hilo last month,” said Denise Laitinen, one of two Big Island representatives on the Social Media Club Hawaii board of directors. “Because Instagram is so popular we wanted to do something similar for the west side, so we teamed up with Julie Ziemelis of Ziemelis Communications and Daylight Mind Coffee to hold an Instameet in Kona, too.”
Laitinen will oversee the Instameet in Kona while fellow SMCHI board member Sylvia Dahlby will manage the Hilo Instameet.
