Restoration Day — a holiday celebrated by the Kingdom of Hawaii — will be observed Friday in Hilo with talks addressing sustainable living and Hawaiian history.
The event is scheduled for at least 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Hawaii County Council Chambers in Hilo and atrium.
Bob Ernst, a volunteer organizer, said the free event is not sponsored by any particular group.
The holiday recognizes the restoration of the kingdom following its overthrow by British forces in 1843.
Topics to be discussed include Hawaiian history, energy independence, food security, recycling and zero waste, albizia elimination, food waste composting, among others.
Restoration Day is not an official holiday, though the council recently passed a resolution asking state lawmakers to recognize it.
