Art Day Group will host a free exhibition featuring artwork inspired by the Lower Puna District from Aug. 29-Oct. 29 at the Pahoa Village Museum.
There will be an opening reception from 5-8 p.m. Aug. 29 with musical entertainment by Thom Gagne &friends.
Art Day Group was founded in 1992 by current members Sara Steiner-Jackson and Barry Wilkinson, and the late MoonStar Rae, who now serves as “Muse.”
“Some people go to church on Sundays; we go to Art Day on Fridays,” Wilkinson said.
It has become a tradition at Ahalanui Park in Lower Puna, where artists meet in the pavilion each week on Fridays. Some artists come and go and others stay. They have exhibited together as a group and some have had a strong influence on each other’s artwork.
As they meet in a public park, their group is open and visited by tourists and residents alike, including schoolchildren.
“As this has been going on regularly for so long that we have had an influence on many diverse lives and hope that will continue, long into the future, by our youngest members,” member Ken Charon said.
Other Art Day Group members include Bruce Black, Paul Boylen, Vince Callager, Rebecca Rosen Charon, Chris Chouinard, Anthony “Hawkeye” Dohnos, Michael Donenfield, Ziji Kerekgyarto, Mango Lehman, Sarah Markoff, Robert Matinjussi, Veruschka Normandeau, Ari-el Silver and Linda Rowell Stevens.
