A Waikoloa man has been charged with drug and weapons offenses after it was reported he was in a parked car with the engine running for two hours Friday evening in Kailua-Kona.
Officers responded to an 8 p.m. call to the parking lot of a business on Henry Street to check on the man’s welfare. They found him slumped over the driver’s seat of a sport-utility vehicle with the engine still running. When they woke him, he appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant and officers saw paraphernalia associated with intravenous drug use inside the SUV, police said.
The man, 39-year-old Derek Conway of Waikoloa, was arrested and taken to the Kona police cellblock. On Saturday morning, Kona vice officers executed a search warrant on the SUV and recovered 40.7 grams of suspected heroin, 2.8 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 26 pharmaceutical pills, a switchblade and $4,457 in cash for possible forfeiture.
At 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Conway was charged with DUI, first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, four counts of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and one count each of fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and possessing a switchblade.
Conway was released from custody after posting $112,000 bail.
