HONOLULU (AP) — The Coast Guard said a man who was adrift for five days on a storm-damaged catamaran was rescued near Kauai.
The agency reported the man was picked up Sunday after it received a mayday call late Saturday afternoon. The man reported a storm destroyed the mast of his 28-foot catamaran five days earlier and he finally got close enough to land to call for help.
He wasn’t hurt but was running low on food and water.
A Coast Guard air crew spotted him in the ocean, and a boat towed his vessel to shore.
Man who lost leg in shark attack hopes to surf again
HONOLULU (AP) — A 25-year-old surfer who recently lost most of his leg in a shark attack near Oahu says he’s determined to ride the waves again.
Doctors amputated most of Colin Cook’s left leg after he was attacked by a 10- to 12-foot tiger shark Friday near the North Shore on Friday.
A day later, Cook was out of his hospital bed and taking a few steps.
The Oahu man just opened his own fiberglass surfboard shop and won’t be able to work while he learns to walk again.
His friends are trying to raise $50,000 so Cook won’t have to worry about money during his recovery.
The Rhode Island native is a regular at the popular surf spot where the shark bit him.
Cane haul road could relieve future west Maui traffic
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Planning officials are looking at turning an unused cane haul road into a route to relieve congestion on a west Maui highway.
An environmental assessment is underway for the proposed project that would extend and improve a street near Honoapiilani Highway, which ranks among the county’s busiest.
Southbound traffic on the highway is expected to increase by 50 percent in five years. The estimated cost of the project in 2013 was $36 million.
Department of Public Works Director David Goode said the search for private and federal funding sources will start after the environmental assessment is completed.
He said construction plans will probably take two years to be approved.
