HONOLULU (AP) — Hurricane Olaf strengthened to a category 4 hurricane Monday, far out over the Pacific.
National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Burke said it’s the 15th major weather event in the Central Pacific basin this season. That’s the highest number on record.
The storm’s maximum sustained winds Monday afternoon were 130 mph. Additional strengthening was expected Monday night, with possible fluctuations in strength today.
Olaf was centered about 1,280 miles east-southeast of Hilo and moving west at 12 mph. Forecasters say the hurricane currently poses no threat to land.
