LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — Rescuers on Kauai were busy during the Presidents Day holiday weekend.
On Sunday, rescuers airlifted a 47-year-old tourist from Houston out of a valley on the island’s rugged Napali Coast.
Kauai County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said someone notified authorities that a woman at Kalalau Beach needed help. When rescuers arrived, they found the woman uninjured. But Daubert said the woman was incapacitated, so they decided to take her out of the valley anyway.
The visitor was flown to Princeville Airport on Kauai’s North Shore and turned over to medics. She refused treatment and was released. The rescue cost $450 for the helicopter alone, not counting fuel and manpower, Daubert said in an email.
Earlier that morning, a couple was rescued after they were swept out to sea at Queen’s Bath on Kauai’s North Shore. A crew on a Jet Ski pulled them out of the water and to safety.
