HHSAA Girls Soccer: HPA’s Mandaguit leads All-tourney selections

Hawaii Prep and Kamehameha-Hawaii led the HHSAA Division II All-Tournament team with 11 selections. Ka Makani defeated the Warriors in a 1-0 battle in the championship game to earn their third straight title.

Hawaii Prep was making its fifth consecutive appearance in the championship match while Kamehameha was back in the finals for the first time since winning the title in 2008.

Ka Makani captain Marlie Mandaguit was named the Most Outstanding Player in the tournament, with teammate Taimane Kamaka earning the top goalkeeper honor.

“Marlie really helped us in the championship game, especially when we lost one of our sweepers at halftime due to a concussion,” Hawaii Prep head coach Steve Perry said. “She rotated back there and did a good job filling in for us. She has a great love of the game.”

Perry added that Kamaka was a rock in the back, saying that the team’s confidence on the field started with his goalkeeper.

Emi Higgins, Julia Perry, Kau‘i Taylor, Teah Van Bergen and Jordan Zarate were also named to the all-tourney team for Hawaii Prep.

Zarate scored the game-winning goal with a header against the Warriors late in the second half of Saturday’s match off a corner kick by Higgins.

For Kamehameha, Byranna-Marie Ebbers, JC Kerr and Kekailani Wong Yuen were all honored with all-tourney mentions.

Filling out the DII all-tournament team were Kapaa’s Natalie Devin and Kauai’s Kaila Shimabukuro.

The Division I All-Tournament team was also released but no BIIF players made the list. Pearl City’s Daeienn Tokunaga was named the DI Most Outstanding Player and teammate Sydney Young received the top goalkeeper honor.

Filling out the rest of the team are Rachel Bowler, Kylee Kim-Bustilos, (Iolani); Pilani Chavers, Maile Kuia, Skylar Littlefield (Baldwin); Sunshine Fontes, Bree Fuller (Pearl City); Tia Furuta, Malia Napoleon (Mililani) and Quinn Williams (Kamehameha-Maui).

Pearl City won its first DI title since 1997.
