A 29-year-old Puna man died from injuries he sustained in an early-morning two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Kilauea Avenue and Kawailani Street in Hilo on April 12.
He’s been identified as Ryan W. Devaney of Pahoa.
Officers responding to a 4:51 a.m. call, determined Devaney driving a 2001 Lincoln four-door sedan west on Kawailani Street when he ran the red light and was struck by a 2014 Peterbilt rubbish truck traveling south on Kilauea Avenue and being operated by a 35-year-old Pahoa man.
Devaney was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was then flown in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died at 6:31 p.m.
The rubbish truck driver was not injured.
Police do not believe that alcohol, drugs or speed were factors.
A negligent homicide investigation has been opened an an autopsy ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Devaney’s death is the 8th official traffic fatality on Hawaii Island this year compared to seven at this time last year.
