The Pilipaa 14s of Hilo beat Tool City of Pennsylvania 29-27, 25-15 at the USAV Boys Junior National Championships on Sunday in Dallas.
Pilipaa finished with a 6-3 record in the bronze division.
The players are Shayson Batin, Makana Credo, Ka’ala Deitch, John Kaapuni, Kamau Makaike, Davin Masanda, Claymon Morante, and Logan Thomas. Head coach is Clayton Morante.
• Guy Enriques’ Southside got off to a good start in the 17s tournament, winning all three matches on Sunday.
Southside defeated Pali 17 Nike of Southern Cal 25-17, 25-15, Southport 17s of Ohio 25-19, 25-12, and Ponce Pumas of Puerto Rico 25-20, 24-26, 15-12.
The tournament runs through Wednesday. Southside will play three matches on the Fourth of July.
Last summer at junior nationals, the Southside 16s won the Silver bracket, finishing ninth overall. The team is headlined by Kamehameha-Hawaii seniors Avery and Addie Enriques and already owns a national title, winning the 14s crown in 2013.
• Hi Intensity of Hilo fell to New York’s Volleyball FX 25-15, 25-21 in the USAV Girls Junior National Championships on Sunday in Indianapolis.
Hi Intensity finished with an 0-9 record in the girls 16 division.
The players are Summer Ah Choy, Makena Ahuna, Trinity Alameda, Alyah Cortez, Pomaikai Evans-Bautista, Cayli Farias, Makena Hanle, and Makenzie Kalawaia. Head coach is Carla Carpenter-Kabalis.
