During the week of June 27-July 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Puna, six; Kona, four; South Hilo, two; and Ka‘u, one.
So far this year, there have been 551 DUI arrests compared to 503 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.5 percent.
There have been 748 major accidents so far this year compared to 768 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 11 official fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, one with multiple deaths resulting in 12 official fatalities, compared with 10 fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths resulting in 13 official fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 7.7 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
