Private roads
This is in response to Sara Steiner’s letter (Tribune-Herald, July 6).
There are many ideas out there to provide for the traffic in Puna, but there is something many people might not know. The roads in Hawaiian Paradise Park are maintained by the property owners, not the county. We have paid to pave many of the roads at our own expense, not out of everyone’s taxes.
Therefore, any plan to use the roads in HPP as a second route in and out of Puna will require the county to take over the maintenance of such roads. I’m sure Sara Steiner would not want the public to start using her driveway, that she paid for, as an access road through her neighborhood!

Wasted food?
There are so many organizations locally, nationally and internationally that collect food and monetary donations to feed the hungry and less-fortunate people on our planet.
But it irks me to see foods such as hot dogs, burgers, eggs, ice cream, doughnuts, etc., being wasted at food-eating contests where contestants make pigs of themselves while the rest of the hungry world looks on.
If food contest promoters must have events such as these, then allow only the less fortunate to be the contestants.
Public schools as well as private schools often partake in food drives, but during school functions such as fairs, carnivals, festivals, etc., they occasionally have food-eating contests. Very counterproductive.

Mahalo for story
Thank you for the article about Elvis Presley and “Paradise, Hawaiian Style.”
I saw the film in a drive-in movie in Pennsylvania in 1966. As a result, I moved to Hawaii and have been here 50 years!

Legalize prostitution
It’s good that Hawaii has banned sex trafficking and implemented laws to help the victims.
It’s said prostitution is “the oldest profession.” Why not legalize it, treat it like any other business, collect taxes and reduce sexually transmitted diseases?
If you don’t want whores walking the streets of Waikiki, ban it. (Nevada already has similar restrictions.)
Sex between consenting adults should be legal — whatever the reason. Free the cops to go after the real criminals instead of ruining the lives of otherwise law-abiding citizens.
