The Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center received a $5,000 grant from Hawaii Electric Light Co. to support its East Hawaii Peer Mediation Elementary School Pilot Project. The program brings conflict resolution and prevention skills to students, developing peacemakers in East Hawaii schools.
The Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center received a $5,000 grant from Hawaii Electric Light Co. to support its East Hawaii Peer Mediation Elementary School Pilot Project. The program brings conflict resolution and prevention skills to students, developing peacemakers in East Hawaii schools.
“Peer mediation directly contributes to Hawaii Electric Light’s focus on community programs aimed at promoting educational excellence,” said Ku‘ikahi Executive Director Julie Mitchell. “Our East Hawaii Peer Mediation Elementary School Pilot helps keiki reach their full potential.”
During the 2015-16 school year, more than 170 fourth- through sixth-graders were trained how to represent their schools as peacemakers and mediate disputes among students. Participating elementary schools were Hawaii Academy of Arts &Sciences, Kapiolani, Keaau, Keonepoko, Laupahoehoe and Mountain View.
The nonprofit Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center offers mediation, facilitation and training to strengthen the ability of diverse individuals and groups to resolve interpersonal conflicts and community issues. For more information, call 935-7844 or visit www.hawaiimediation.org.
