The artists of Hawaiian Paradise Park will present their sixth annual Paradise Studio Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1-2, featuring 13 studios hosting 45 artists and crafters throughout the subdivision near Keaau.
“An eclectic group of artists open their studios with guest artists, featuring paintings, pottery, fiber art, mosaics, glass, jewelry and wood — too many to mention,” said event spokeswoman Michelle Deis.

Throughout the two-day tour, artists and crafters will offer free demonstrations and showcase their creations available for purchase.
“The tour is free and open to the public to browse through original paintings, pottery, fiber art, jewelry, mosaics, gourds, wood, fused and blown glass, prints and cards of artists’ works,” said Deis.
In addition to the information and map provided online, coordinators will put up banners and signs in the Keaau area and throughout Hawaiian Paradise Park to assist folks in locating the studios. Brochures can also be found at many business locations in Keaau, Hilo and Pahoa.
Art demonstrations will include silk scarf painting with Patti Pease-Johnson at Studio G, clay and cement hand-building with Karen Hagen at Studio D, clay and raku pottery by Margaret Lynch at Studio K, painted prayer flags by Ann Kalber at Studio C and create-your-own holiday ornament with Hopper Sheldon at Studio B.
“The best news is that our mission is being accomplished, to support and encourage art and fellowship among artists in our community through the December tour where local artists open their studios to display their work in the setting where it is created,” said board member and clay artist Patti Datlof.
“Our mission also is to encourage art education through donations to local schools for art supplies and provide opportunities for mentoring, lectures and workshops. With school budgets tight, we are aware of the need for art supplies and equipment.”
Over the past five years, the Paradise Studio Tour artists collective has donated over $5,800 to art programs at local area schools. The donations are rotated annually between Keaau High School, Pahoa School and Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences in Pahoa. Proceeds from sales at this year’s tour will be donated to Pahoa School’s art department. In addition, art students from these three schools will be exhibiting selections of their work in the studio tour.
Many of the participating artists’ pieces are displayed in island art galleries. The event provides an opportunity to personally meet the artists, talk story and purchase art directly from them, plus discover new talent and witness the creativity flourishing on Hawaii Island.
