On April 28, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints gave members in Hawaii and California the opportunity to participate in various service projects. Among the busy groups of volunteers were 312 members and friends of the Hilo-Hawaii LDS Stake who worked on several projects in East Hawaii.
Their projects included Andrews Gym, Kolekole Beach Park, Whittington Beach Park, Shipman Park, Isaac Hale Beach Park, Cooper Center, Panaewa Park and Carvalho Park. Members added to the beauty and safety of the various locations by repainting parking stalls, cleaning pavilions, and painting guard rails and handicap accessible entrances.
“Smiles were big and spirits were high as people came together to complete projects that would benefit their community,” said spokeswoman Kacie Shirai.
A total of 921 hours were spent, and various government officials came by to show their appreciation for the work that was being done.
The church’s project coordinator, George Bezilla, noted afterward, “We are excited by the number of members and friends that came out to beautify the community and provide additional safety to our schools, beaches and centers which we treasure.
“As members of the church, this activity demonstrates how important the community is to us. We look forward to next year and are hopeful that more members of the community will join us,” said Bezilla.
