The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting announces that Ryan Gentry, a surgical technologist at North Hawaii Community Hospital, has been designated a certified surgical first assistant.
Gentry received this advanced certification after successfully completing the board’s examination demonstrating a mastery of procedures in arthroscopic surgery for shoulders. His credentialing caps a decade of NHCH operating room experience in shoulder surgery.
As a CFSA, the Honokaa native will perform such procedures as placing retractors in and sewing ties in the shoulder area.
“Arthroscopic shoulder repairs are getting more popular now because we can do more with joints,” said Gentry. During a recent visit to Chicago with NHCH Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Diane Payne, Gentry witnessed first-hand a number of these new surgical applications.
