For the past three years, students from Nago City, Okinawa, have visited McDonald’s of Hilo in conjunction with the Haari Boat Festival in August. Hilo is the sister city of Nago City and this year the cities celebrated 30 years of friendship. The students, ages 13-15, had an opportunity to test their English-language learning skills, tour the restaurant, build their own sandwiches and made either a hot fudge sundae or chocolate-dipped cone for dessert. The students also received a tote bag and soccer ball to remember their experience. McDonald’s of Hilo is owned and operated by Hilo resident Patrick Lim.
