St. Joseph School’s seventh- and eighth-grade classes traveled to Oahu on Nov. 7 to participate in the “Return to the Moon” mission at the Challenger Center in Kapolei.
“Students trained for weeks to develop skills necessary for a successful mission, such as teamwork and communication, as well as specialized knowledge in the fields of lunar geography, navigation, chemistry, and electrical circuitry,” said Mark Caudill, math and physics teacher.
During the simulated mission, students successfully left earth orbit, successfully entered lunar orbit, and were engaged in ascertaining an adequate landing site and location for a lunar base when they ran out of time and virtual fuel, forcing them to abandon ship.
After the mission, students visited the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, where they toured the Science Building and the Hawaiian Hall, “impressing the guides with their considerable knowledge of Hawaiiana,” Caudill added.
