Hawaii’s primary election took place Aug. 13. We had historically low voter turnout, with only 35 percent of registered voters casting their ballots. So, that means a full 65 percent of eligible voters did not show up to vote!
Consider all the problems that we face: the homeless on our streets, rapid ohia death, fire ants, the rising cost of living, the devaluation of property because of coqui infestation, and the highest electric utility cost in the nation.
Low voter turnout seems like the worst response because it is our elected officials who can implement the solutions. With all these major issues, we need more community involvement, more democracy, more voters’ voices being heard and more participation.
This time, we better vote!

I would like to give a big thumbs up to the senior services program at Kamana Senior Center.
I don’t think most people realize how helpful the classes offered are to keep seniors healthy, social and productive.
Honestly, I think more people should check it out — seniors, soon-to-be-retirees, caregivers, kids of seniors, ohana.
There are classes for dance, crafts, languages, karaoke, sewing, exercises, tai chi, sewing, all kine stuff.
Personally, besides doing healthy activities, I get to try things I’ve never done before and to meet people I probably never would have met otherwise. My favorite classes have been Kristina’s gentle yoga and Harriet’s Zumba gold. And each 10-week session costs only $10.
Iris and her staff are wonderful — usually smiling — and sometimes are looking to introduce new classes for those, like me, who enjoy variety and novelty.
