The National Weather Service will issue a high surf warning this evening for north- and east-facing shores of Hawaii Island.
The warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Surf up to 25 feet is possible, particularly on north-facing shores, NWS meteorologist John Heyman said.
Heyman said high surf is caused by an ongoing storm off Japan which has taken a northeastern turn and has also caused recent gusty winds.
Residents should expect high surf to continue. Heyman said NWS is tracking a second “very large storm” which recorded “hurricane force winds yesterday.”
“It’s just a train right now,” Heyman said. “It’s not stopping anytime soon. There may be some small lulls between swells but it’s not going to go completely flat. It will just be swell after swell.”
Hawaii County Civil Defense advises boat owners and oceanfront residents to secure property before nightfall and to be on alert for possible high and dangerous surf including beach and road closures.
