State Supreme Court Justice Michael Wilson will speak about “The Global Judicial Response to a Planet Under Siege from Climate Change” at 7 p.m. Thursday in UCB 100 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Wilson was appointed to the Hawaii Supreme Court in 2014 after serving 14 years as a circuit court judge. He also was chairman of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Commission on Water Resources Management, and was active in many environmental issues as a private attorney, most notably the Save Sandy Beach Coalition on Oahu.
His talk will focus on climate change’s threats to Hawaii’s forests and fresh water supply, coral reefs and shorelines. He also will discuss how global warming threatens agriculture worldwide and promotes the spread of tropical diseases, and review the establishment of the Hawaii Environmental Court in 2015.
Wilson has worked with a group of judges and lawyers, including the chief justice of the National Green Court of India and a justice of the National High Court of Brazil, to create an international legal framework for the unprecedented global crisis that is developing because of human pollution of the atmosphere with greenhouse gases.
The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. It is sponsored by Global HOPE and the Hawaii Community College student government. A pizza snack and drink will be served.
