The public is invited to celebrate Kamehameha Day and the memory of Kamehameha the Great during the annual Kamehameha Festival from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 11 on Moku Ola (Coconut Island) in Hilo.
This year’s festival theme is Queen Lili‘uokalani’s motto: E ‘Onipa‘a Kakou, “To be steadfast, established, firm, resolute and determined.” Event coordinator Pua Ishibashi said the theme was chosen in honor of Lili‘uokalani and in remembrance of the 124th anniversary of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
The free event will feature Hawaiian music by some of Hawaii’s top musicians and the sharing of traditional dance by selected hula halau throughout the islands. The festival also will feature art and craft vendors and ono (delicious) food.
The drug-, alcohol- and tobacco-free festival is presented by the Royal Order of Kamehameha, Mamalahoa, established in 1907.
“We invite you to spend Kamehameha Day with us, on Moku Ola, for a day of aloha for the entire ‘ohana (family),” Ishibashi said.
