The Sierra Club Moku Loa group and county Councilwoman Eileen O’Hara are sponsoring a talk at 6:30 p.m. today in Hilo titled “The Effects from El Nino on our Coral Population.”
The presentation will be given by Katryn Wiese, professor of geology and oceanography at City College of San Francisco, and will cover coral bleaching globally as well as in the waters off Hawaii Island. The event will take place in the County Building’s Aupuni Center Conference Room, 101 Pauahi St., Suite 1.
This is the first of a three-part series of presentations about marine ecosystems intended to encourage community involvement in the health of reefs and encourage better stewardship of local marine ecosystems.
Electric vehicle rebate extended
The offer of a $10,000 rebate on a new, all-electric Nissan Leaf sedan for Hawaiian Electric Company customers was extended through June 30, Nissan announced.
Funding for the program comes from Nissan and, with federal tax incentives, total savings could equal $17,500.
The Leaf has a starting price of $30,680.
To participate, customers can present their electric bill to a Nissan dealer for the rebate. The 2017 Nissan Leaf has a 107-mile range, needs no gasoline or oil changes.
Book fair
to benefit zoo
The Friends of the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo &Gardens is sponsoring a Usborne Book Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. May 20 at the zoo.
Usborne Books &More has been named Independent Publisher of the Year for three consecutive years with consistently high-quality, engaging books for children from birth to high school.
Usborne will provide Panaewa Zoo a matching grant, so every book sold at the fair will directly benefit the zoo with needed funds.
Writers group launches website
The newly formed Hawaii Writers Guild launched its website, www.hawaiiwritersguild.com.
The website features profiles of its professional members and links to their published works.
Guild projects include writer workshops in Volcano, Hawi and Waimea and public readings of members’ works at libraries and other venues.
Another Guild project is a partnership with the Thelma Parker Memorial Library in Waimea, where the guild will host open readings and critiques. Brown bagging is encouraged.
The guild was formed in February by a dozen writers. Membership has grown to 26 members including writers from the Big Island and Oahu.
