Waiakea graduate Sarah Dvorak’s tennis season came to an end Thursday as she and Texas Tech playing Sabrina Federici lost to No. 15 Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt of Northwestern 6-2, 7-5 in the opening round of the NCAA doubles champion ships in Athens, Ga.
Ranked No. 26, Dvorak and Federici, both juniors, posted a 16-11 record this season as the Red Raiders’ No. 1 tandem.
• Honokaa graduate Dylan Shiraki pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings Thursday with a strikeout as Northern Colorado upset top-seeded New Mexico State to remain unbeaten at the Western Athletic Conference tournament in Mesa, Ariz.
On Wednesday, Shiraki, a senior, earned the win in relief as the fifth-seeded Bears (24-28) beat Utah Valley State 6-4 for the program’s first win at the tournament.
On Friday in the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament, Northern Colorado plays No. 3 Sacramento State for a spot in the title game. The loser must win twice Saturday to remain alive.
