Activity will return this week to the former Sports Authority location at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo as contractors prepare the space for two new tenants.
Mall manager Daniel Kea said the location will be occupied by clothing retailer T.J. Maxx and Petco, though opening dates have not yet been set. Sports Authority closed last August.
“It’s really up to the tenants,” he said.
Construction will involve building interior walls and other features.
Kea said that work should be done by about November.
Each store will have its own external entrance.
T.J. Maxx, which has more than 1,000 stores nationwide, will be the larger tenant, with more than 25,000 square feet of space. Petco will occupy about 15,000 square feet, he said.
Kea said there is room for a third tenant. That space is smaller, at about 5,000 square feet.
Meanwhile, Genki Sushi is tentatively looking at an August opening in a new building in the northwest corner of the mall’s parking lot, Kea said.
The previous building at the site was torn down after Hilo Hattie closed.

Any news on when either of these will be opening? November came and went with no further news.
