DUI enforcement for the July 4 holiday, including roadblocks, will start tonight, police said today.
Sgt. Robert Pauole of Hawaii Police Department Traffic Services Section said there will also be an increased police presence on Tuesday, since it is the actual holiday and people traditionally flock to the Hilo Bayfront for the fireworks show.
“On that night, we do expect a lot of crowds, and possibly a lot of drinking, especially in the Hilo area,” he said. “… I know patrol forces in all the districts … bring in more officers to ensure the safety of the people.”
Pauole had this advice for people driving this weekend and on the 4th: “Don’t drink and drive, wear your seat belts and obey the speed limit.”
