The members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host a musical fireside at 5 p.m. Sept. 3 to honor the faithful leadership of 12 stalwart men and women who led the church on the Big Island
The members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host a musical fireside at 5 p.m. Sept. 3 to honor the faithful leadership of 12 stalwart men and women who led the church on the Big Island from 1851 until the present day.
The tribute in music and story will take place at the LDS Hilo stake center, 1373 Kilauea Ave.
Titled “Halawai Ho‘omana‘o” (“A Gathering of Remembrance”), the presentation will begin with a walk-through viewing of a historical photo gallery comprised of 100 rare images of early members and church buildings from the late 19th and early to mid-20th centuries.
The tribute begins at 6 p.m. with Hawaiian music, songs and stories. The honored Big Island Mormon church leaders include:
David and Martha Ka‘ilima‘i, Kaaoaolahilahiokeohokalole Kailikini, patriarch William Meyers and Chiyo Meyers, Luka and Edith K. Kanakaʻole, John and Mary Pe‘a, Ah Kui and Amoe Aina, Akima and Annie Ah Hee, David K. Chong and Lily Lilinoe Chong.
Also recognized will be the six earliest presidents of the former Aleʻamai Branch:
Samuela Wai‘ono Nu‘uanu, D. Keola Ka‘ilima‘i, Simeona Pa‘aluhi, Williama Kama, Henry Keamo Sr. and Samuela Nawela.
Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
