Teuila Lafi, a fifth-grader at Nawahiokalaniopuu Public Charter School in Keaau, represented Hawaii in July at the World’s Miss Tourism Pageant in Nashville, Tenn., where she won the national title of World’s Pre-Teen Miss Tourism.
The World’s Miss Tourism Pageant Organization provides self-improvement opportunities for girls and women throughout the country, according to its website. Contestants serve as public speakers, entertainers and models for events worldwide.
“It is great to represent my state and country and be able to use my title to help people in the community,” said Teuila, pronounced like “tequila” but without the Q.
Upon her return, Teuila, 10, met with Mayor Harry Kim and discussed her platform, Operation Christmas Child. The Hawaiian immersion school student loves to send shoe-box gifts to keiki in developing countries.
She also wants to be a part of an anti-bullying campaign on the Big Island.
