LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — The state Department of Health has placed at least three beaches under bacteria warnings.
On Kauai, Hanalei Bay and the Anahola Beach Park pavilion area are under warnings. While on Oahu, Kuhio Beach in Waikiki is under warning.
Officials placed advisory signs along the shorelines in all three areas.
The department states levels of enterococci bacteria, commonly found in the fecal matter of warm-blooded animals, at Kuhio Beach were four times higher than acceptable. Officials were retesting the beach Monday.
The Anahola Bay and Hanalei Bay advisories will remain in effect until bacteria numbers dip below the threshold.
Waikiki shooting suspect, 2 others taken into custody
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu authorities took three people into custody Sunday evening, one of whom is thought to be a suspect in a shooting that left one dead and two others seriously injured.
The three subjects were pulled from an apartment building that police partially evacuated when authorities moved in.
The manhunt came after a suspect fired an assault rifle Saturday morning at a group of people standing near Club Alley Cat in Waikiki, police said.
The man fired about 10 rounds at the group, police said. A 22-year-old man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Two other victims were taken to a hospital in serious condition.
US-North Korean tensions prompt delay in flights
HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea prompted a Hong Kong-based airline to delay flights between Guam and Japan.
HK Express announced five weeks ago that it planned to start the flights Oct. 29, but since delayed them until next summer “in view of geopolitical concerns in the region.”
Passengers who bought tickets will get refunds, HK Express said in a statement Friday.
