To celebrate Boy Scout Camp Honokaia’s 50th anniversary, the West Hawaii Boy Scouts District hosted a Sportsman Challenge shooting competition Sept. 23 at the sprawling outdoor complex.
Company-sponsored two-person teams competed for prizes, trophies and bragging rights in five disciplines: archery; .22-caliber rifle, target; shotgun, trap; .22-caliber rifle, small gong target (3-inch); and tomahawk throw.
“It was a great opportunity for companies to enter teams that brought out marksmanship talent from their employees and friends,” said Jason Ontiveros, West Hawaii district executive.
“We were very thankful to have great local companies sponsor 13 two-person teams to a fun day of safe shooting competition and to experience the beautiful campsites and longhouse at Boy Scout Camp Honokaia,” Ontiveros said.
Camp Honokaia opened in 1967 under the Kilauea Council, now known as the Aloha Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Honokaia continues to host annual summer camps, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts overnighters, leadership training, special campfires and pow wows.
Scouts continue venturing to Honokaia from around throughout the state and around the world. Camp Honokaia has served more than 40,000 Scouts, issued more than 200,000 merit badges and conducted more than 7,000 flag-raising ceremonies, Ontiveros said.
Ontiveros thanks the many sponsors and volunteers through the years who help maintain Camp Honokaia’s campsites, longhouse and other facilities.
