Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center, in participation with the Hawaii County Bar Association, is hosting its 12th annual fundraising Recognition Dinner and Auction at 5 p.m. Nov. 12 at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo.

This year, Ku‘ikahi is giving the Peacemaker Award to Julie Hugo, broker in charge of Clark Realty Corp. and an active community volunteer, and posthumously to Jeffrey Melrose, land-use planner and past president of Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center. The HCBA is honoring Ronald Ibarra, retired chief judge of the 3rd Circuit.

The evening kicks off with no-host cocktails followed by dinner. The buffet features carved roast prime rib, chicken marbella and macadamia nut crusted fish. Also on the menu are bleu Caesar salad, vegetable rice pilaf, fresh garden-grilled vegetable primavera, mashed sweet potato, dessert and punch, iced tea and coffee.

Newton Chu and Jeri Gertz will emcee the gala. Items up for bid in the silent and live auctions include gift certificates for rounds of golf, outdoor excursions, overnight stays, dining experiences, artwork and gift baskets, fine wines, orchids and much more.

The fundraiser provides a significant portion of the funds Ku‘ikahi needs to provide free and low-cost dispute prevention and resolution services in East Hawaii. Proceeds support its mission of “Finding Solutions, Growing Peace.”

“Mediation is an empowerment model for shared decision-making,” said Ku‘ikahi president Doug Adams. “Mediation encourages self-determination and provides a safe space for all voices to be heard. We need more peace-building programs on Hawaii Island.”

Tickets are $90 per person (of which $45 is tax deductible) and available from Ku‘ikahi’s board of directors; at Ku‘ikahi’s office in the Hilo Lagoon Centre, 101 Aupuni St., Suite PH 1014 B-2; Day-Lum Rentals; and The Most Irresistible Shop.
