“Asians in American Films” is the topic of a 10-week series of films and related discussion periods sponsored by the county Department of Parks and Recreation from 1 to 4 p.m. on Fridays in the lower level auditorium at the Institute for Astronomy at 640 N. Auhoku Place in Hilo.
The series, which began last week, will show important American films and discuss how the portrayal of Asians, particularly Japanese and Chinese, has changed from the 1930s to today.
Cost is $10 for the series, payable at the door. Each week stands alone, so participants may want to choose to attend only some of the films, said spokeswoman Susan O’Neill. Please park on the street.
To reach the venue, drive on Komohana, turn makai on Nowelo toward the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, but take the first lefthand turn. The Institute for Astronomy is the building at the end of the street.
Following is a list of event dates and a tentative list of the films scheduled.

— Jan. 27: “Flower Drum Song” (1961);
— Feb. 3: “The Sand Pebbles” (1966);

— Feb. 17: “The Karate Kid” (1984);
— Feb. 24: “Empire of the Sun” (1987);
— March 2: “Legend of the Drunken Master” (1994), and
— March 9: “Memoirs of a Geisha” (2005).
