The newly formed Hamakua Community Forum on Youth, co-sponsored by the Hamakua Youth Foundation and the North Hawaii Drug Free Coalition, will convene at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the North Hawaii Education and Research Center in Honokaa. It will be hosted by the Third Thursday Thrive Group as part of its ongoing effort to stimulate community involvement and volunteerism.
This open forum, consisting of a cross-section of the community — including representatives of local youth-serving agencies and organizations, schools and community volunteers — will be discussing challenges facing local youth and their families.
“The goal is to create a working grassroots effort in support of recreational and educational alternatives for youth,” said spokesman Joel Cohen.
The January agenda includes a continuing discussion on topics discussed at the first forum meeting on Nov. 16, a networking organizational plan, and exploring collaborative ways to secure much needed funding for existing programs.
Participants attending the November gathering included Sen. Malama Solomon, newly elected County Council members Valerie Poindexter and Margaret Wille and County Prosecutor Mitch Roth, all who strongly support this community effort.
