WAIANAE, Oahu (AP) — The man accused of driving the car that slammed into a bus shelter that killed a 3-year-old boy and seriously injured the boy’s mother and three siblings has been charged in the case.
Potasi Uta was charged late Friday with first-degree negligent homicide, first-degree negligent injury and failure to render aid. He was being held on $100,000 bail.
Police say the 44-year-old Uta was driving the car that crashed into the wooden shelter and killed Ashton Brown around 10:20 p.m. Thursday. After the crash, officers pulled Uta’s vehicle over about two miles away.
The Star Advertiser says Uta was paroled March 20 from a work furlough center at Oahu Community Correctional Center.
Court records obtained by the newspaper show that he has six felony convictions and six misdemeanor convictions, including 1986 convictions for drunken driving, car theft and criminal property damage.
