HONOLULU (AP) — The Royal Hawaiian Band will receive the 2012 Industry Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
The award will be presented Saturday at the Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Awards Reception.
Only three other entities have received the industry honor — Bishop Museum, Kamehameha Schools and the Hawaii Calls radio program.
Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle says the Royal Hawaiian Band has a significant place in Hawaii’s history and serves as a great institution of Hawaiian culture.
Its exceptional bandmasters and historic performances have generated worldwide respect, he adds.
The Royal Hawaiian Band celebrated its 175th anniversary last year. It performs more than 300 concerts annually — in Hawaii, the mainland and abroad.
