Happy Mother’s Day, all. It’s time to give all those “moms” in your life lots of love and a whole day of specialness.
One special Mother’s Day celebration is today at the Island Faith Center. The public is invited to a hear Native American performer and minister Cheryl Bear at 9:30 a.m. at the Papaaloa Gym (makai at the 24-mile marker on the Hamakua Coast). The celebration includes special indigenous Christian ministry in music with drums and native regalia by Cheryl Bear and her team, ministry of the word by her husband, Randy, special gifts for all moms, and a potluck luncheon.
After the morning service, the celebration will continue with a concert at Laupahoehoe Point. Cheryl is a member of the Bear clan of the Nadleh Whut’en tribe in British Columbia, Canada. She and her husband travel extensively with a goal of visiting all the First Nations groups in the U.S. and Canada. Her CDs have garnered three honors in the Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards.

The public is invited to the North Hawaii Education and Research Center’s Heritage Center’s opening for the exhibit “Plantation Life on Hawaii Island” on Tuesday, May 15, at 3 p.m. The exhibit features photographs by John and Anne Bowen taken in the 1970s as part of a Hawaii Bicentennial Celebration grant. The images will be intermixed with plantation era artifacts. The photos by the Bowens capture ethnic festivals, ILWU rallies, small kid time, and the day-to day lives of people living in plantation camps. The exhibit will be up through January 2013 and is free to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa.

The Sew Fun After School Sewing Program will be holding its Third Annual Open House & Showcase on Wednesday, May 16, at 4 p.m. at the Honokaa United Methodist Church. Light refreshments will be served. Parents, friends and the general public are invited to attend and enjoy viewing items participants have made during the past year. Quilts, clothing, pillow cases, purses, and other interesting projects will be proudly displayed by participants in the program.
This is the fourth year that ages 9 to adult have gathered on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 4 p.m. to learn hand sewing and proper use of a sewing machine from adult volunteers. After four initial projects, participants select and/or design the projects he/she wishes to make. This year, each Sew Fun participant made a lap quilt which was donated to North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea. More than 15 quilts were provided to the care program.
Sew Fun is jointly sponsored by the Honokaa United Methodist Church and FCE, and coordinators and participants are grateful for the support of various individuals and community organizations. For further information, call the church at 775-0566.

The Lifelong Singer, a study and performance program for vocalists of all abilities, will be held June 26-29 at Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Waimea. Robin Buck, professor of vocal arts at the University of California-Irvine and featured performer this spring at the Long Beach Opera, will direct the program. Lifelong Singer is a component of the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival (HPAF), the Big Island’s summer classical music festival now in its eighth season.
“As far as we know, Lifelong Singer is unique and the only program of its kind,” said Artistic Director Val Underwood.
“Where else in the world can you find a program where older singers can receive quality instruction from a renowned faculty — and have the chance to perform? Lifelong Singer is for people who sing just for the love of it.” Auditions are not necessary.
Cost for the four-day program is $595. A typical day will consist of a private voice lesson, vocal technique and acting classes, rehearsal or ensemble work and yoga. Lunch is included. A season ticket good for all paid HPAF concerts— a $140 value — is included.
