In celebration of the 2012 HSPLS Hawaii State Public Library System Summer Reading Programs, special performers will be featured at eight selected public libraries statewide this month. Two of the programs are on the Big Island. Admission is free.
On Monday, June 25, at 2:30 p.m., Barbara Chung Ho will discuss the “Folk Art of Chinese Knotting” at Kealakekua Public Library. Chung Ho, who studied this ancient folk art form in Taiwan, has taught Chinese knotting to children, teens and adults at Hawaii’s public libraries as well as other venues for a number of years.
She will share a brief history of the subject, conduct a step-by-step demonstration of the basic techniques, and then invite the audience to participate. This workshop is limited to 20 participants. Registration is required; please call the library at 323-7585 to register.
On Saturday, June 30, at 1 p.m., Badenyaa will present “Afro-Cuban, Haitian and Central African Drum and Dance” at Thelma Parker Memorial Public & School Library in Waimea. Badenyaa is a professional performing arts ensemble of multiracial artists, dancers and musicians with experience in numerous dance companies throughout Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.
