Hawaii Pacific Parks Association donates $10K to HVNP

To celebrate a recent apparel collection designed around Hawaii volcanoes and the ecosystems they create, the company Parks Project donated $10,000 to the Hawaii Pacific Parks Association to support its mission: With the spirit of aloha, to inspire the discovery and stewardship of the natural and cultural heritage of Pacific island parks.

Honoka‘a Peace Day Festival set

Every September, the official International Day of Peace is celebrated in Hawaii and around the world. It is acknowledged globally and practiced locally in Honoka‘a, with six days of peace-themed events.

‘Walk to Prevent Addiction and Overdose’ slated for Sept. 30

The inaugural “Walk to Prevent Addiction and Overdose” is a free event for all ages hosted by the Hawaii Island Fentanyl Task Force. Registration is at 8 a.m. on Sept. 30 near Hilo Bay Café and the Lihiwai Street/Banyan Drive intersection. The walk starts at 8:30 a.m. There will be prevention resources available, live music and more.

Volcano Festival Chorus returns

The Volcano Festival Chorus is back. Rehearsals are from 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays at the New Hope Christian Fellowship Church located at 11-3019A Volcano Road, Volcano, near Akatsuka Orchid Gardens.

Library opens registration for art class

Thelma Parker Memorial Public Library has opened registration for the next First Saturday Community Art Class, Watercolor Halloween, which will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Sat., Oct. 7 in Waimea.

Big Island NAMIWalks returns Oct. 14

The 5th annual Big Island NAMIWalks event will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Lili‘uokalani Gardens. Pre-walk check-in and registration begins at 8 a.m. at the pavilion near the Japanese Teahouse.

Old Hawaii on Horseback Pageant returns

After a four-year hiatus, the Paniolo Preservation Society is bringing back its signature event, the Old Hawaii on Horseback Pageant, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 16) in Waimea.

Tropical Gardening: Urban landscaping keeps Hawaii green

Planting shade trees in along streets and parking lots can reduce temperatures by 20 to 30 degrees. Urbanization without sufficient landscaping is impacting Kona and Hilo, but Puna, Kohala and other population areas are also seeing a trend toward removing trees.
