HPM pledges $100K for college scholarships

The HPM Foundation has made a five-year pledge totalling $100,000 to the University of Hawaii Foundation to provide college scholarships for students enrolled at UH campuses across the state.

Another Revitalize Puna event set for Oct. 21

Hawaii County’s Disaster Recovery Division, in partnership with Council District 4, will host the ninth Revitalize Puna “community activation” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Billy Kenoi District Park Gym in Pahoa.

Hilo Trek the Trail event deemed a success

Filipino culture, history to be celebrated at Hilo Barrio Fiesta

The Samahang Filipino Club of Hawaii Community College and the Bayanihan Club of the University of Hawaii at Hilo — in collaboration with Hawaii Island Filipino organizations — will present the Hilo Barrio Fiesta from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at UH-Hilo’s Campus Center Plaza.

Waimea Fall Festival returns this Saturday

After a three-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fourth annual Waimea Fall Festival returns from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Spencer K. Schutte Waimea District Park. Admission is free, and general parking will open at 9 a.m.

Rowdy, a Hyacinth macaw, and Romeo, a Moluccan cockatoo, spend time Tuesday outside their habitats with their handlers, Jean Jasina and Dolores Coulson, who are volunteers with the Animal Enrichment Team at the Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens. Rowdy and Romeo get “enrichment time” by greeting patrons, eating snacks and playing with toys beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. As Rowdy flaps his wings while being carried around the zoo, Romeo rides his custom-made skateboard and greets visitors.
