The Hawaii Police Department’s Hilo Community Policing Section, in partnership with Maha Village Neighborhood Watch, co-sponsored the Lonoikamakahiki Catch-and-Release Fishing Tournament Nov. 19 at the Lehia Beach Park in the Keaukaha area of Hilo.

Volcano Watch: Mauna Loa reawakens

At 10:45 p.m. Sunday evening, Nov. 27, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists were alerted to an earthquake swarm beneath Mauna Loa. Before an hour had gone by, lava had broken the surface within Moku‘aweoweo, the summit caldera, for the first time in 38 years.

The U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory sets the Volcano Alert Level and Aviation Color Code for volcanoes in Hawaii and American Samoa. Currently, Kilauea is erupting and is at WATCH/ORANGE, Mauna Loa is in elevated unrest and is at ADVISORY/YELLOW, and the remaining six monitored volcanoes are at NORMAL/GREEN.

Tropical Gardening: Poinsettias are showing color for the holidays

November is almost over but the Christmas holidays don’t seem real until we get our Thanksgiving meal digested. Poinsettias don’t seem to care since they are beginning to show color now. Folks on the mainland think of the poinsettia as a Christmas flower but for us it blooms now through March.

Hawaii Care Choices gets $25K grant

Hawaii Care Choices, formerly Hospice of Hilo, was recently awarded a $25,000 grant by Richard Robbins and his wife, representing the Max and Yetta Karasik Foundation, to support the increased costs associated with patient care supplies and equipment for individuals receiving hospice care in East Hawaii.

Surfing camp offered for keiki with disabilities

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation announces that the Surfers Healing Camp for children with disabilities will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, Richardson Ocean Park in Hilo.
