Burns School of Medicine, a practicing internist specializing in hematology and oncology and researcher, was drafted for military service after his residency and assigned to the then-National Heart Institute as research associate in the Puerto Rico Heart Program, was the department chair, integrated medical residency program director, hematology-oncology division chief and acting clinical director at the UH Cancer Research Center, the acting director of the UH Arthritis Center, chaired the Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners and was co-founder and president of Medical Associates Ltd.
