In a reactionary political movement desperately trying to reestablish the racial and sexual hierarchies of the past, pervasive fear of Black history is not hard to fathom. The more accurate the history that Americans learn, especially about the centuries-long Black struggle against violent White supremacy, the more morally and politically indefensible is the cry of Make America Great Again.

The Supreme Court must reject efforts to ban the abortion pill mifepristone

ANew Orleans federal appeals court has rejected ideologue Texas Federal Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s ruling against the Food and Drug Administration’s 2000 approval of the medication abortion drug mifepristone, the second part of the two-drug regimen that is frequently used instead of surgical abortion. The panel, however, decided to also reject science in siding with Kacsmaryk in overturning the 2016 and 2021 expansions that allowed, among other things, the drug to be mailed.

Irwin: Make yourself at home

Tomorrow is the first day of the fall semester at UH Hilo. We have spent the last few days welcoming new students, welcoming (and then bidding farewell to) their families, and also welcoming back continuing students and faculty. Most of the staff, except for vacations, are with us throughout the summer, but as we approach the beginning of a new semester, the work changes, the pace picks up, and there is renewed energy on campus.
